Deep Conditioning 101

1. Begin with clean wet hair.

Clean hair will allow your hair to get the conditioner's full benefit. Also, having wet or damp hair enables the conditioner to easily penetrate the hair shaft.

2. Choose a good deep conditioner.

It doesn't matter if you choose your favorite DIY recipe or your favorite store bought conditioner, make sure it is one that is appropriate for your hair needs and hair type. I like to alternate between moisturizing and strengthening conditioners.

3. Section hair to ensure even application.

Be sure to section hair with the appropriate amount of sections according the the thickness and length of your hair. I personally like to section my hair into four quadrants using butterfly clips. Then, I will take down each section to apply the product.  This assures that I treat each section of my hair.

4. Use the "praying hands method".

Apply conditioner thoroughly to each section of hair with smoothing motion.
Don't be shy with your conditioner. Apply the appropriate amount of conditioner to your hair making sure each strand is fully coated. I love to use the praying hands method when smoothing in my conditioner. This allows you to smooth the conditioner evenly down your hair strands.

5. Use a plastic cap or two.

The plastic cap will trap heat and moisture in your hair allowing your hair to soak up all of the benefits of your conditioner. If you find yourself in a pinch, use a recycled plastic grocery bag. Just place it over your head and tie it around your head using the handles.

6. Use heat!

This has to be one of the best ways to get the most from your deep conditioning treatment. The heat will open up the cuticles of your hair strands and allow for deeper penetration of the product. You can do this by sitting under a hooded dryer or using a microwavable heat cap.

7. Rinse with cool water.

The cool or cold water will close the cuticles of your hair strands. Therefore allowing the nutrients from your conditioner to stay in your hair longer.  This  method will also give you smooth, frizz free, shiny hair.

I hope this has helped you on your healthy hair journey. Happy Deep Conditioning!
